Parasite links schizophrenia between cats and their owners

Bad news for cat owners. Research has concluded that it is likely that people living with a kitten are more likely to develop schizophrenia. Although this hypothesis is not new.

The study carried out by a group of Australian researchers from Queensland Mental Health Research Centerand which was collected by the specialized magazine National geographictook up an idea already present in the 90s.

But until now it was thought that the connection between living with these animals and the development of this disorder was not so clear. However, the group led by John McGrath, the lead author of this study, conducted an analysis of 17 of these surveys.

And their conclusion was that there is indeed a relationship between living with kittens since childhood and have a certain type of schizophrenia-related disorder. The reason for this link appears to be, according to the study, due to a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii.

Regardless, the latest report indicates that previous investigations were suboptimal. And, with his, the possibility opens that another study finish concluding if there is a connection or not.
