One more year (and now there are 52, only three less than those accomplished by the NGO which gives it its name and organizes it) the Nuevo Futuro solidarity flea market will open its doors in Madrid. From November 17 to 19and from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., this popular flea market, where neither Queen Sofía nor famous faces are missing – some of them set up their stalls there, like Laura Ponte, Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada or Simoneta Gómez-Acebo – will occupy the Crystal Gallery of Cibeles Palace after several editions at the Casa de Campo in the capital. This is a unique opportunity to discover vintage decorative jewelry, signature thrift stores, books, refined costume jewelry, delicatessens or Christmas decorations at attractive prices, as well as one of the shopping plans of the most fun winter for its uniqueness and its lively restaurant area. . But it is also and above all an opportunity to change stories.
Those who count New futurethe NGO that founded Camen Herrero de Garralda in 1968 to create homes for children experiencing social exclusion, which was one of the first to offer an alternative to the gray and overcrowded orphanages of the time, they present raw truths, untying knots and full results of hope. Today, the organization, which has already welcomed 2,856 children, makes visible a problem that is much closer than one might think, “right here,” he says. Josefina Sánchez Errazurizpresident of Nuevo Futuro since 2009.
We spoke with her about a reality that must be faced because help can change everything.
Is the reality of 1968, the year of the creation of Nuevo Futuro, the same as that which the organization faces today?
Nuevo Futuro was created 55 years ago to remove children from orphanages, which were overcrowded centers where children had no identity and were treated like numbers. The founder, Carmen Herrero de Garralda, had the idea of creating small houses to provide a familiar and comfortable environment for children until they turn 18. Today the orphanages have disappeared and it is the autonomous communities, such as the Community of Madrid, which, after taking guardianship of a minor because it was considered that he lacks a suitable family environment, direct him towards centers. One of them is Nuevo Futuro, which currently has homes all over the world and is very successful, because children see what it means to live in a family environment and, above all, they see what it means to live with love.
Does the condition heal?
It is the most important. These children bring a huge backpack of lack of self-esteem, abuse, abandonment… Their parents cannot take care of them because they have drug problems, prostitution or are in prison. They are not protected by anyone and are at high risk of ending up on the street. Affection heals because it gives you self-confidence, it helps you make friends… If they treat you well, you treat them well.
Is this what they appreciate the most?
A long time ago, I was an apartment sponsor, who is a volunteer figure within the NGO. When you’re mad, you don’t have time with them, they’re preguntas like they go to school, they go to the movies, they celebrate their birthdays… They know that the cariño that the ladies are disinterested and very much valued by those who quiera and don’t love them. for him. Ultimately, when you’re missing one thing, that’s what matters most to you.
Once in Nuevo Futuro, what is the contact with your families?
Not everyone sees their parents, it depends if they have been rehabilitated. Visits are never carried out in homes, but always in offices so that there are no comparative grievances with children who cannot find their parents. We take great care of it.
Is social exclusion a problem of wealth or poverty?
Without a doubt, a child without resources is generally less protected and more exposed to the risk of social exclusion, although our field is also linked to a question of family mental situation. In Nuevo Futuro we have had children from a “good family”, it is said that they are “deprived of a family environment”, but generally families with a good economic situation resort to other solutions and go elsewhere. For example, they may send the child to a boarding school in England. Also, we have cases in which a mother has lived with us because we do not have any means to maintain and before we have been on the street, although we may have other problems such as delinquency, prostitution… who have been on the street. center.
And do you welcome them?
We cannot welcome a child without a procedure. There must have been complaints before this through the autonomous community. Once confirmed that the child does not have a suitable family environment, the latter refers him to us. We placed him in apartments with nine children; If there are brothers and sisters, always together so that it is a small family.
Is there a lot of demand?
There are more and more children in these circumstances. These are children who are expensive because they have to have a home, people to live with them… In the case of Nuevo Futuro, we have six workers for nine children who work eight-hour shifts, night and day . These workers are graduates, super prepared people with a lot of vocation. Although those of us who make up management are volunteers, there are a total of 600 professional workers who, of course, must be paid. There are also office and lawyer costs… The State cannot take care of so many children and that is why it relies on our organization.
You also have emancipation centers for people over 18 years old.
They are very important. When the children finished their studies at Nuevo Futuro, at age 18, they faced a big problem: where to go next. It scared them terribly. They had joined the NGO as children and until the age of 18, they were very cared for and protected but after… First they try to make them live with a member of the family but sometimes this is not the case. It’s not viable and in 2016 we created these emancipation homes where these children with certain special characteristics spend at least two years. They have an educator who takes care of them and it’s a success. We help them look for a job, write a CV…
And then there is a link?
There are two trends: some children always come back because we are their family reference. I remember a boy, David, who, at the time of his wedding, came with his fiancée because she wanted us to tell him in detail what he was like as a child, what he did, if we had any photos of him as a child… They invite you to their children’s baptism, or they come back to tell you that they are separated, that they have found a new job, or if they need help paying the rent. But there are others who want to break with their previous life, they don’t want to be adopted children. We don’t see them again and we respect that and it also feels right to us.
What is your reward?
To feel useful. Being privileged and being able to help other people who have had bad luck cannot be paid for. Because no one knows why we were born on one side or the other. A child, in addition, is a victim, because the adult chooses his life but a child gets what he gets, and see how he does and then call you to be his godmother at his wedding… is priceless. In the end, it gives you so much… We have impressive experiences.
And of course, many anecdotes.
There is a beautiful one. A boy from Nuevo Futuro whose mother abandoned him, when he was older and about to get married, was so sad to go to the wedding and have children and not be able to bring anything, not family, that he asked one of the educators to help him. She did it and now her children have a grandmother, uncles, cousins… There are such human and beautiful stories…
How did the idea for the New Future Rake come about?
The financing of autonomous communities came much later than the creation of Nuevo Futuro. The president and her friends began looking for ways to get money to buy a first floor where they could put their first house and came up with the idea of raking in the garage of one of them. them with donations from their friends. They took out a lot more money than expected and bought the first floor. After creating this first home in which the children were very happy, they began to create other homes. Additionally, these flea markets started to become hugely successful because they had great things that people were giving away. This year is the 55th anniversary of Nuevo Futuro and almost of the flea market, since for three years, due to the pandemic, it was not celebrated. It lasted 52 editions because people had fun: in previous editions, artists like Pitingo, Sara Baras went to perform for free… At the time, Rocío Jurado too. There were flamenco tablaos… This year, there are people who work in the building and we can’t say “chunda-chunda”, but we sell donated objects that come from fascinating houses, these are good stuff and very cheap. The market has taken on such a life of its own that some people think it’s set up for a good time and barely know the story behind it.
Is Spain a united country?
I would say yes, but sometimes it’s hard for people to see the problems that are right next to them, probably for two reasons: one because sometimes they turn their backs on them so they don’t see them, and if you don’t see them no, you don’t have them; Secondly, because it is sometimes difficult to know these realities. In the end, we do not encounter realities different from yours, we interact with people who are similar to us and we do not leave a certain circle. The market, however, is a test of solidarity: people give us everything, from brands to individuals, including celebrities and anonymous people. A feat.
