NOTRarely has a death shocked Hollywood as much as that of Matthew Perry. As the charming and sarcastic Chandler Bing in “Friends,” he became one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors in the 1990s.
In her 2022 memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” Perry also shared with fans her addiction to alcohol and drugs — the “big, terrible thing.” The actor wrote about his first excesses of wine and beer at the age of fourteen, up to 55 painkillers a day on the set of “Friends” and on the set of the film comedy “Divorce is Sweet”, that he had to take a break in 2002 to go to a rehabilitation clinic. Get rid of cocaine and the synthetic opioid methadone. “The man takes a drink,” Perry wrote, “the drink takes the rest.”
